What is Zanzibar PVOC Certification?

According to the requirements of the Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) program implemented by the Zanzibar Bureau of Standards (ZBS), all imported goods under the controlled category must be accompanied by a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) during customs clearance to demonstrate compliance with relevant technical regulations and standards in Zanzibar.

Toys, sports/electrical and electronic products, automobiles

Chemical products, machinery materials, and gas appliances

Paper and stationery, furniture (wood and metal products)

Textiles, leather, plastics, and rubber/safety (personal protective) equipment

Food and food products/used products/fuel products

Technical Requirements for Zanzibar PVOC Certification:

Compliance requirements: Goods comply with applicable standards (in priority order):

Zanzibar standards (ZNS), followed by Tanzanian standards (TZS), then EAS standards, international standards (ISO, IEC, Codex Alimentarius UN ECE), and finally national standards. If no applicable ZNS, TZS, EAS, international, and national standards are available.

National deviations: If electrical products are intended to be connected to power (220V or 230V or 240V), frequency marking should include 50Hz (not applicable to lamps). If a plug is provided, it should be a British type plug (square pins). Other types of plugs may be accepted if an adapter with 3 square pins is provided.

Labeling requirements: All labels on imported product packaging should include English and/or Swahili. For imported food products with limited shelf life:

For food with a shelf life of 9 months or more: At least 6 months of shelf life.

For food with a shelf life of less than 9 months: At least 75% of the shelf life remaining from the expected arrival date in Zanzibar.
